Mothers' Union members in Chester organise the 'Excursions Unlimited' scheme. It was set up to offer those people whose outings are limited by age, disability or who no longer drive an opportunity to get on an excursion of their choice. Usually this is a pub lunch.
There is a small team of drivers with a reserve list, who provide door-to-door service and each month the group visits a different but not too distant pub which serves good food and has suitable disabled access. Passengers and drivers buy their own lunch, enjoy the company and have time to chat.
All drivers have comprehensive insurance and all venues are vetted for suitability and accommodation, not to mention food quality. A passenger list is drawn up each month and each passenger is allocated a driver. The drivers then contact their passengers to arrange pick-up times. Passengers make a small contribution towards petrol costs, currently £2, direct to their drivers. There are no tax implications for drivers.
